Confession: I started the new year feeling like I was already behind, big time.
A few weeks before, I’d tried my very best to get ahead. I started working through my PowerSheets, and made plans for the new year.
But then Christmas hit, and with it came a bunch of sickness for our family. So I spent a couple of weeks taking care of the kiddos and washing all the things. And then? Then, I got the sickness. Except amplified, because that’s what happens when you’re a mom.
So, I started the year feeling way behind. All the organization and preparations and planning that I wanted to do? Well, those things hadn’t even kind of happened. Nada. Zilch. Zero of the things had happened.
My friend Lara likes to say that there’s nothing magical about January 1st. And so, I’m taking a cue from her today and declaring January 10th the official first day of the year!
(I know that’s not really a thing. But just humor me, will you?)
Since it’s the first day of the year ;), let’s talk goals, shall we?
SIMPLE GOALS FOR 2017
The older I get, the more I realize that I seriously can’t focus on more than one thing at a time. So this year, I have just four simple goals – and really, only ONE of them takes priority.
Goal #1: Become a faithful steward of my health & body.
Why: Well, this is a goal that’s been on my list for years. But it’s a difficult one for me, and because of that, it often gets pushed to the back burner. That’s easy to do, because there are always “urgent” things that seem more important than working out. (Or, my emotions too big to deal with, and I don’t do a good job choosing what I eat.)
Reality, though, is that I have allowed things to get in the way – simply because I’m not as focused on this goal as I could be. So, this year, I’m making this my PRIMARY GOAL. Something I’m focusing on every single day, with the Lord’s help. And I will need His help! But hopefully, with a little planning and a lot of effort, I’ll end 2017 in a much better place physically, than when I started.
- Commit to working out every day – with a minimum of 20 minutes of cardio. I started another round of the 21 Day Fix today, and I’m going to stick with it.
- Meal plan each week, and track food each day.
Goal #2: Grow in knowledge and understanding of the Lord & His Word.
Why: I am so very aware of how our culture contradicts, and even condescends, God’s Word. And it is just so easy to listen to the voices of the world, and wonder if what we believe is actually true, especially if we don’t actually know what God’s Word says.
So this year, I’m continuing to make time in the word a habit. I’m also focusing on teaching it to my kids, so they are well-equipped to face the world with the truth of Scripture. I want them to be sure of their faith, know who God is & what He says, and have His Word hidden in their hearts.
- Complete morning quiet times using our Simple Scripture Study.
- Read the Bible with Jon in the evenings, using the studies from She Reads Truth (and He Reads Truth).
- Read the Bible to the kids each night, from our favorite Bible.
Goal #3: Organize my home, finances, schedules, and routines.
Why: Because SANITY. Our place is so tiny, and we still have a lot of stuff. (It wouldn’t be a lot of stuff in our old house, but in this house, it’s a LOT!) So, I’m still trying to declutter and give away and clean out and reorganize. I also have yet to really solidify our school day routines, and Jon and I are having a hard time syncing our schedules (some google calendar glitch), so there’s always something coming up that I didn’t know about. We’re also trying to be SO GOOD about our budget and tracking our expenses, so we’re working on that. Still.
- Finish cleaning out the bedroom closet.
- GET RID OF MOVING BOXES.
- Track budget and expenses each week. (You can see the system we use here.)
- Develop a new weekly schedule and daily routine.
Goal #4: Cultivate a life-giving home.
Why: I want our home to be a place of safety, love, and so much fun. I want to establish intentional anchors in our week, traditions that my kids can look to and depend on, that create stability within our home.
I feel the urgency of this more strongly now that Emily is in school – we have so much less time with her, and I want each moment at home to count. Most of all, I want home to be a place where they learn who God is, where they can ask their questions, and find the answers.
- Establish intentional anchors in our weekly schedule. (Right now, we’re sticking with Friday Family Night with pizza and a movie, and we’re starting Cinnamon Roll Saturdays, which the kids are LOVING. We’re also reading the Bible together each night.)
- Read the Bible together with Jon each night.
- Finish organizing the house & clearing any clutter. If it’s not essential, we don’t keep it in this tiny space.
And that’s it! All four goals are important to me, but I’m definitely focusing mainly on that first one, at least for this first quarter.

My One Word for 2017
I had a word for the year all chosen about a month ago. In fact, I was so sure about it that I ordered my annual one word ring.
But over the last few weeks, as I’ve thought through my goals (which I actually revamped – initially I had 5 goals, and I totally ditched 3 of them and adopted those last 2 instead), that word just didn’t exactly capture my heart for the year, or where I felt the Lord was leading me.
So, I kept praying about it, and thinking about new words, and here’s what I finally landed on. My word for 2017 is:
The one word encompasses my focus for the year. I’m learning how to nourish my body through healthy food and exercise. I long to nourish my faith through time in the Word. My heart it to nourish my family through an organized, warm, loving home, and meaningful relationships.
What You Can Expect in 2017
When it comes to our Intentional Mom community, my heart is to nourish you as well – through Biblical encouragement and practical resources that help you make time for what matters most. So, here’s a little of what you can expect this year!
January | Our focus will be on intentional living – what it means to be an intentional mom, and how we incorporate grace-filled intentionality into our faith, families, and homes. There’s also an incredible deal coming at the end of the month, especially for anyone who’s interested in decluttering their home!
February | Our focus will be on loving our people, starting with a challenge to encourage our husbands! We’re also going to talk about how we love those people in are lives who are hard to love. I’m really looking forward to talking to you all in February!
March | Our focus will be on our homes – cleaning, organizing, and creating a space that inspires us and serves our family well. And I’m launching a brand new product this month – one that will seriously help you organize your home – and I AM SO EXCITED!! So keep an eye out for sneak peeks of that!
April | Our focus will continue to be on our homes, and talking about some of those forgotten projects that we always mean to get to, but rarely do! Plus, April always brings my favorite sale of the year – The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle! I can’t wait to see what’s in this year’s bundle, and share how we can all use it to make homemaking a little easier.
May | Our focus will be on motherhood, and what God says about it. We’ll be stuffing you full of encouragement and life-giving resources. May is for moms! Oh, and also the academic version of The Organized Life Planner (plus a few new planner packs)!
And that’s as far as I’ve planned. 🙂 But I’m so thrilled about the next few months, and can’t wait to share them all with you!
