This magical thing has happened in our home over the last few months. I feel like it’s a trick, and I know it won’t last, but I’ll take it as long as I can get it.
See, a while back, Emmy’s mouth got her in trouble. I don’t remember what she said, but it wasn’t respectful or grateful, and so she had a consequence. That day, her consequence was CHORES. All the chores. She had to scrub the windows, the floor, and the counters. She had to fold socks and wash dishes and dust things.
And she loved it.
Alright, so my plan totally backfired on me, but once I got over that, I realized that we have now reached the age where Emily can not only clean pretty effectively, SHE ALSO THINKS IT’S FUN!
This is where the gold is, people. WE HAVE ARRIVED.
And so, with March here and spring cleaning right around the corner, I am taking FULL ADVANTAGE of this beautiful situation!! Magic, I tell you.
Generally, I put off spring cleaning, because even though it SOUNDS FUN to get the house all nice and put together, in reality it’s a little OVERWHELMING. It’s hard to know where to start, and what all needs to be done. Especially since I’m not the greatest at keeping up cleaning all year long.
But this year, I’ve already got a jump on things. I found a couple of shortcuts to simplify the cleaning frenzy I know is coming, and I’m actually excited to get into it! Emily must be rubbing off on me.
So today, I thought I’d share how I’m prepping for spring cleaning, and hope that maybe a little bit of Emmy will rub off on you too!
3 Ways to Simplify Spring Cleaning (before you even begin)!
1. Make a Plan
You know me, I’m all about the plan. So as I started thinking about everything that needed to be done at home, I got out my favorite notebook and began to make a list. I went room by room and thought through exactly what needed to be done – from small tasks to big projects! Then I prioritized, and used a highlighter to color code what was urgent, and what could wait.
What I was left with was a master list of everything that needed to be done in my home, prioritized and ready to go!
Having my cleaning plan all written out helped me know exactly what was the most important, where I should begin, and how long each task should take. That written plan helped me to go from overwhelmed to purposeful!
2. Gather Your Supplies
I don’t know about you, but I hate getting all pumped up to clean the bathroom, only to find that I’m all out of counter wipes. That totally trashes any motivation I had!
So this year, I surveyed all of my supplies ahead of time, and I figured out what else I needed.
We’re pretty big on using natural & non-toxic products in our home, so a lot of the time I just make my own cleaning supplies using essential oils. That takes a bit of time and energy though, and that’s not something I have a lot of right now. So this year, I went a different route.
I looked online for the cheapest way to get what I needed, and I found Grove Collaborative to be my very best option, even over Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program! I placed my order with Grove Collaborative, and seriously couldn’t believe it when it arrived the very next day!
(Haven’t heard of Grove Collaborative? It’s an online store that delivers the best, effective and affordable natural household and personal care products right to your doorstep. And like I said, in my experience, it’s been cheaper than Amazon, and that’s saying something, because you KNOW how much I love Amazon.)
I love love love Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products, but they tend to be a little pricey. So I was excited to see that the discount on Grove Co. was pretty significant! And I might have thrown in some facial cleansing wipes, a lip balm, and a candle, because one can never have too many candles.
Perhaps the most exciting part of our order though, was the Mickey Mouse Shampoo & Body wash from Method. My little guy in particular was OUT OF HIS MIND excited. He is completely obsessed with Mickey.
Honestly, I’d passed up the idea of using Grove Collaborative in the past. But I heard so many good things about it that I finally took advantage of their special (This week they’re offering an incredible special – New Mrs. Meyer’s Products, a beautiful glass spray bottle, and a set of walnut scrubbers – all for FREE!! Check it out here.), and I’m in love. Doing my shopping through ePantry just made everything easier, and you can bet I’ll be ordering from them again.
Yes, I could have gotten everything at Target, but this way I saved money, got a freebie, and didn’t spend our entire life savings on throw pillows and $5 t-shirts. (Oh Target, how you slay me.)
Plus, I’m actually excited to use these products. They are so pretty and they smell wonderful! New pretty things make cleaning a little more fun.
3. Recruit Some Help
Mommas, you do NOT have to do spring cleaning alone! THIS IS WHY WE HAD CHILDREN. I mean, there are other reasons too, but seriously – put those kids to work!
On your master plan for spring cleaning, make a little note by each project about who is going to complete it. Make it fun for the kids – have them earn a quarter or a candy for every task they complete! My kids will do ANYTHING for a jelly bean. I have definitely used this to my advantage lately, and have started keeping a steady supply of Jelly Belly’s on hand. I’m not even sorry.
Are you ready?!
So there you have it. 3 ways I’ve made spring cleaning a little simpler before I even start. Make that plan, gather your supplies, and put those kids to work! You can do this, momma!!
